Death is inevitable and the process of decay is a powerful reminder of our mortality. Using visual triggers such as representations of rotting flesh, my work provokes questions of existence. Rather than accepting death, coping mechanisms are created in order to avoid it. One of these mechanisms is manifest in the desire for longevity and the current cultural narrative of the cyborg as an indulgence of the fantasy of physical immortality. There is a rising enthusiasm about the technological singularity, an epoch in the near future that brings hope with ideas like digital souls, a cure for aging and cybernetic bodies. I explored the concept of the decaying cybernetic body as a means to remind the viewer that there is no physical immortality and death is certain to come no matter what kind of body you possess. The technological singularity is a fatal fantasy; it should be feared rather than exulted.
