Skin defines our outer most limit, the division between ourselves and others.  The skin provides our psyches with a metaphor for protection against harsh environments.  Our sense of psychic well-being is inextricably linked with our skin.
When the fragility of epithelia tissue succumbs to disease and trauma, aspects of our inner self leak out.  Our body defends infections from consuming us by destroying and purging the threat. Once that threat is expelled, then the healing process can take place, but if the wound is deep enough though, a physical/mental scar may remain.
With this work I play with the interaction between in/out, mind/body, thought/action, real/fantasized, pain/pleasure and push/pull.  The outer skin forms contain various self portraits of my hands, the farthest limit to which I can feel others.  The inner bodily forms contain self portraits of my mouth, the deepest limit to which I can communicate with others.  Each painting is shaped like slabs of skin that I’ve casted off and onto the gallery wall.  In many ways this body of work represents an aspect of myself which I channeled from my subconsciousness and into the material realm.
